It's intentional that I posted this on the 4th of Jan 2009.
Last year was a trial especially the last 6 months.
- Since 07 I've embarked on a project to create the 1st ever gamer's magazine in the country.
Homepage- 08 is election year and much like the US election, we're also having a government change. Much like the States, we also have 2 major parties: Social Democrats the NDC (my dad's a high level member) and the Democrats the NPP (my grandad was a former chairman and remained one of their top men).
- On the 15th Jul, my grandfather passed away after a short illness. Being the immediate former speaker he was slated for a state burial but as it was said, "we lost a great tree." The family, more than the country. My dad being his 1st born (& son) incidentally now had to take his stead, and I as his 1st born (& son) had to be there for him.
I didn't even know when it happned. Knew he was in hospital but not that it was this bad. Sleeping then wake up to 7 missed calls and several texts saying sorry n condolences. My young cousin was home n we were instructed not to let him kno what happened. So it was him and my other cousin and brother home going about normal life, knowing that sumthin terrible happened.
The announcement- Things were cool till August when the funeral came. It was a nightmare. Funerals are usually big events in our culture and if it's gonna be a state funeral multiply that stress and anxiety by 50. It was going fine aside the usual few hiccups you don't expect. Only thing that really ticked me off was having the grandkids tribute (to read by my sis, bro n i) cut out and replaced by the NPP's presidential candidate reading a speech containing a retread of my grandad's life (read by my dad already) punctuated by how he was the chosen one in politik speek.
Report of the funeral- Immediately after the funeral exams. The pressure was on because I was kicked out once and had to start afresh, so NOTHING was going to stand in the way of me passing. I won't kno the results till I go back in late Jan/Feb but I feel I did well. I'm actually more worried about 2nd sem, where the real heartbreakers are.
- Again immediately after the exam, my cousin's wedding. It's usually not that big a deal but she's more like a sister than a cousin (especially with her living bout a 3rd of her life with us). Needless to say, we were deep in preparing and executing the wedding.
- Then immediately after the wedding, election preparations. And the stakes are huge:
+ Recent elections and coups over Africa have left us scare of the what if.
+ Recent discovery of oil off our coast, which will come into production in the rule of the next govt.
+ Our pres has finished his 2 terms n is stepping down.
It was a bloody hard run. Thankfully on the 7th the elections were mainly peaceful, but the real problem was with rigging (to which the govn'ing party had the advantage). So we went to a run-off on the 28th, and thanks to their efforts it was still a dead heat. It came down to 1 constituency that hadn't voted to produce a winner on the 2nd.
They knew they wouldn't have it so they begun a court case calling for the results of the election to be suspended leaving the country in a bad way since handover is constitutionally supposed to happen on the 7th.
- But finally, they gave up the case, the election commission announced the results yesterday and now we have a new president and govt coming to power. My dad's hard work has paid off and now we can relax.
The result announcement- Still have the mag to work on though. Gotta figure out a way to raise $5,000, finish the site and make sure the foundations for issue 2 are solid cuz this is HARD work.
